“Growing up is scary!  There’s school, there’s tests, there’s telling time with clocks that have the hands!  There’s tying your shoes and … there’s kilograms … and kilomograms!” ~ Kid President

That is a quote from one of my new personal heroes, Kid President.  I couldn’t have said it better myself.  Being a kid is hard work!  Being a kid can be scary!  There’s a lot that our small friends have to navigate and figure out.  When reading is also one of those things, it can make the world that much more intimidating.

Go Team!

There is something really amazing about having someone in your life who believes in you.  At Leaders for Readers we have watched our young readers blossom over the past few weeks.  They are reading challenging books out loud, performing poetry and speaking confidently in front of their peers.  There are many programs that can help your child learn to read, but at Leaders for Readers we feel we that go a step beyond.  Our readers grow because they have someone on their team, cheering them on every step of the way.

This week, we’re profiling some of our amazing teams and showing you what they have been reading together.

Leaders for Readers just wrapped up its fourth week, and we could not be more excited about how much everyone is learning and growing.  One of the greatest parts of the program has been the last 5-10 minutes when we all come together as a large group and we get the chance to share what we read that day.

What a great group we have gathering every Saturday morning at The Story Garden!

We have had readers volunteer to read a poem, talk about their favourite picture book or even demonstrate a team cheer!

At Leaders for Readers we have two goals that form the heart of what we believe in and what we try to accomplish with the program.  We want reading to be fun, and we want to build relationships.  When this happens, we know that we’re doing our job.

As I walked through the room last Saturday, I couldn’t help but feel the joy!  Everywhere I looked, kids and teens were enjoying themselves and engaged in reading.  One of the teens flagged me down just to exclaim, “We’re having SO much fun!”

A few weeks ago, we put the word out to area high schools that we were looking for energetic teenagers who wanted to share their love of reading with children.  We could not believe the response!  The Story Garden was buzzing this past Saturday with over 50 teens and readers! (NOTE: If you would like your Gr. 1/2 child to be involved, there is still time to register. Click here for details.)

We LOVE seeing so many readers in our Garden!

Once readers are paired with their leaders, the team spends some time getting to know each other.  They find out about each other’s favorite things, background and special details like the meanings of their names.

Our Leaders for Readers program connects high school teens with struggling readers in primary grades. The teens are trained to use effective techniques and great literature to inspire their young friends while earning volunteer hours necessary for graduation.

Every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning in The Story Garden, readers are paired with a leader to spend an hour reading and sharing with each other.  The children enjoy having a special book read to them, and they also get to show how much they have been learning by reading to their leader.  Finally, teams work on memorizing a poem and reading a bit of their team novel.
