At Leaders for Readers we have two goals that form the heart of what we believe in and what we try to accomplish with the program.  We want reading to be fun, and we want to build relationships.  When this happens, we know that we’re doing our job.

As I walked through the room last Saturday, I couldn’t help but feel the joy!  Everywhere I looked, kids and teens were enjoying themselves and engaged in reading.  One of the teens flagged me down just to exclaim, “We’re having SO much fun!”

Anyone can see that Gabriel and Danyal are a perfect match.

Bringing the fun back into reading is an important part of what we do, specifically for those who have found reading to be a challenge.  These children often spend a great deal of time “decoding” and working with books that are at their level, but are by no means entertaining.  It’s important to remind children that reading is fun, it’s an escape and it’s a skill worth learning!

The Story Garden is also a place where relationships are grown.  It’s a wonderful thing to find a cozy corner alone and disappear in a book, but it’s equally fantastic when reading is social!  When children join Leaders for Readers, they are paired with someone who is older than they are, not their parent and excited about spending time with them!  Finding a mentor can be a great confidence booster, and we love being able to provide the opportunity!

If you know someone who could benefit from finding the joy in reading with someone who thinks they’re awesome, get in touch!  We can always pull up another pillow!
